Across South Africa there are social clubs dotting the landscape from different European cultures that represent people who came here in more colonial times. Nowadays there are descendents that keep them going but they’ve also embraced the idea of being an eatery and watering hole to share the cultural cuisine and grog, but also bring in enough income to keep the clubs open. It’s not an unfamiliar sight to see a South African neighbourhood that has a German, Italian or Portuguese club with a menu that matches.
In Edenvale there is a local classic for those who know about it. The Edenvale German club has been a regular haunt for a few people but those who haven’t heard of it and finally go are typically pleasantly surprised at how good the food is, how much space there is outside for kids to play and how much they generally enjoy themselves. The service is usually top notch although there can be a few disinterested young folks employed from time to time as they drift between service work and something greater or worse.
The food ranges from the typically German to the typically for children. You can’t really go wrong with a schnitzel of sorts but a local favourite is always the eisbein. Enjoying sundowners on the lawn is a good way to spend time there. Prices aren’t too pricey and they have some specials on occasion that make it completely budget friendly. The bar inside is smoking friendly and often the halls are reserved for private functions and everyone usually has a good time.
I’ve been here many times throughout the years. In my younger days I attended a local punk show where a human friend of mine flashed his nuts at me. The action reminiscent of a chimpanzee reminded me that we’re not so far removed from each other genetically. I’ve also been there for the memorial of a friend’s father. A German named Adolph. That ‘ph’ doing a lot of lifting to destroy any connection to that other guy. But most recently I’ve been going for the specials and the big outdoor screen, a great place to watch sports with friends and family.
As long as they keep doing what they’re doing – offering good food and drink at decent prices in a fine location – I’ll keep going back.
