Zoo Lake Bowls Club is one of those timeless Joburg institutions that never seems to lose its charm. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a drink or a hearty meal without breaking the bank, all while overlooking the well-kept bowling lawns and, more recently, the newly added padel courts. There’s something grounding about the setting of green lawns, open space, and a relaxed pace that feels away from the city rush, even though you’re still in the thick of it.
On weekends, the atmosphere shifts into something more festive. When I visited, a jumping castle kept the kids busy while parents lingered over drinks, and later in the evening a live band turned the place into a buzzing community spot. It’s this veritable versatility that makes Zoo Lake Bowls stand out. It’s as much a family destination as it is a social hangout.
The service deserves special mention. Despite our large table, the staff handled everything with efficiency and genuine friendliness, the kind that makes you feel like you’re more of a guest than a customer.
