So I came across this film The Three Musketeers from 2023. It was bad. I only got through about 5 minutes. The costumes were terrible. The acting even worse.
I didn’t mind that they cast a black guy as D’artagnan but they didn’t know how to shoot and light for his complexion and unfortunately the kid wasn’t that good at acting. Not that anyone else shone either. Except for how bad they all were. The shitty costumes didn’t help. And the fact that it seemed to have been filmed in a local park didn’t exactly add any grandeur or gravitas to what is one of our planet’s favourite stories. It was simply terrible.
I’ve read a few other reviews and most folks seem to agree: this film is bad. It does seem like perhaps it was someone’s tax write off as one reviewer suggested, or a hapless attempt to ride the coattails of an apparently French film that came out at the same time.
After having finished the book recently I was excited for a recently made movie of the story, but boy was I disappointed. It reminded me of the first year student films we made back in film school. Folks trying but only making something quite terrible.
Please do yourself a favour and don’t watch it. Some folks actually sat through up to 45 minutes of that shit. I didn’t have the patience. Those first 5 minutes were some of the worst of my movie watching life. How in the hell did something that bad ever get made? I’ll be watching the 1993 film soon to get something that’s actually worthwhile and presumably does better justice to the book itself.
